The day you get married should be an event, a memorable occasion you can look back on with fondness. It should, as the cliché goes, be the ‘happiest day of your life’. Far be it for me to pass judgement on other people’s choices, but here are five of the weirdest themes for weddings ever (and yes, these all really happened).
5.The Shrek Wedding

Yes, that’s right: a couple really did get married dressed as Shrek and Princess Fiona from the Shrek movies. The sad part is that these people – Christine England and Keith, er, Green (truly!) – were in their 40s when they tied the knot in 2009. What were they thinking?
The best part is that most of the guests didn’t bother with fancy dress, rendering the whole theme of the wedding a little redundant.
- The Robot Wedding
If you’ve ever been to Japan, you will be well aware that the capital Tokyo genuinely looks like something from a science fiction movie. So, I guess it isn’t that surprising that Japanese couple Tomohiro Shibata and Satoko Inoue chose to have their wedding officiated by a robot.
Unfortunately, the robot’s name was the I-Fairy and it was a child sized creature with weird plastic pigtails. State of the art, I’m sure, but frankly, embarrassing for all concerned. Well, not quite as embarrassing as the bride declaring that “the robots are our friends” but not far off.
3. The Hello Kitty Wedding
Are you a man? Are you getting married? If the answer to both of these questions is yes then you should never, never agree to a ‘Hello Kitty’ themed wedding. In fact, if you are a man and your prospective partner mentions a ‘Hello Kitty’ themed wedding, then it might be a good idea to rethink the whole marriage thing altogether.
Unfortunately, there are men like Jamie Ng out there who have suffered through a completely Hello Kitty themed wedding and had to smile while doing so. It’s all on YouTube, but I can’t bear to watch. Won’t someone please think of the children?
2. The Nude Wedding
If you are going to enter a competition where you can get your wedding paid for, surely you should be looking to get some great wedding gifts, an awesome venue and top class food and drink?
What you shouldn’t do is to enter a competition run by the Fox Network in Australia where you have to take your vows in your birthday suits. Strangely, hundreds of Aussies did just that and the winners Josh and Shelley not only had a naked wedding ceremony but a nude first dance as well. Thankfully, the guests were fully clothed.
1: The Star Trek Wedding
Be honest: you knew this one was coming, didn’t you? For reasons that aren’t clear to me, there are dozens and dozens of people who like to get married in Star Trek costume.
Now, if you are into Star Trek, that’s all fine and good but this is your wedding day. Are you still going to be a fan in 20 years time? What will you think when you look back on your wedding photos only to find one of you is dressed as an even more out-of-shape Captain Kirk?
Worse still are the couples that have a Klingon wedding. A word to the wise: Klingons aren’t real. Do you really want to start married life with a wedding ceremony based on a fictional race of people?
