DIY Bride On A Budget Tells All | Stephen + Nikki

Are you a DIY bride?  Or, being even more specific, are you a DIY bride on a budget?

Nikki (Hixson) Lane was a SPRINGS bride at our Rockwall location, and her wedding was absolutely stunning.  We couldn’t believe Nikki, her friends, and her family did all of it on their own–and on a budget!  The Lanes proved that planning a wedding with a spending limit doesn’t mean you have to limit your wedding dreams.  Seriously, Nikki’s wedding gave us allllll the heart eyes!!!

We interviewed Nikki and asked about her story–from how her and her now-husband, Stephen, met, to the big day.  All answers below are in her own words, and we’ll be pointing out some of our FAVORITE features along the way!

HOW DID YOU + STEPHEN MEET?

We met on May 3, 2014 at a young adult sand volleyball event with a church that neither of us regularly attended. We were both invited by different people… but obviously God wanted us both there on that night. Stephen came up to me and the first thing he said was, “I like your sunglasses.” We were on the same volleyball team the whole night (and we did quite well, if I may add 🙂 ). I left for England the next day to visit a friend, and when my plane landed, I had a Facebook message from him saying he was praying for my trip and looked forward to hanging out again (although we hadn’t talked about hanging out again) ;). When I got back, we went on our first “official” date on May 26th.

HOW DID HE PROPOSE?

The night Stephen proposed (August 26, 2016) was a night like any other night. He had come over to my family’s house to pick me up. We were going to eat dinner at the house and then go see a movie– NOTHING made me believe he was about to propose. I was completely shocked when it happened.

As we all stood up to hold hands to pray over the food, Stephen acted like he was going to pray and then got down on one knee. WHAT?! There was no way this was happening right now…. but, it was.

He said some sweet things about how he knew I was “the one” when he first met me, and how he wants to spend the rest of his life with me… and then asked me to marry him. Of course, I said yes. It was the best possible way he could have proposed– to have my family there (mom, grandma, grandpa, and sister) was the absolute best thing ever!

Stephen + Nikki planned their wedding for eight months (which she said was the perfect amount of time//not too long–not too short) and got married on April 24, 2017 at THE SPRINGS in Rockwall.

WHAT WERE SOME OF THE BEST MEMORIES FROM YOUR WEDDING DAY?

Thankfully, I remember SO MUCH about our wedding day. I remember first arriving to the venue that morning and there were already sweet family members there setting everything up.

The stillness as I looked across the field at where we would, in just a few hours, say our vows, was breathtaking. I cried, but that’s nothing abnormal for me :).

I remember the day was PERFECT. Everything about it… all the way down to the weather. You see, at the beginning of the week, the forecast for Sunday did NOT look good. We prayed a lot. We prayed for the weather to be sunny and 75 with a cool breeze. We were very specific, but we knew it wasn’t too hard for God. I remember standing in the bridal suite with my bridesmaids… we were getting ready to all go out and line up when a girl in my house party ran in and said, “HAVE YOU LOOKED AT THE WEATHER?!” I almost pooped my pants… I was so scared–I wasn’t sure what she was referring to. She informed me that right at that moment, when we were about to line up, it was sunny, 75 degrees, and there was definitely a cool breeze. Wow! God is extremely faithful.

I remember walking down the aisle seeing Stephen BAWLING… I had never seen him cry so much. It was the most precious thing. We didn’t get to see each other ALL DAY– it felt like a lifetime. I actually remember passing him on the road that morning (the boys were out putting up signs on the road) and my heart literally did something funny… it was strange. I love him.

Before the ceremony, we had a moment where we prayed together… I stood at the top of the steps coming up from the bridal suite and he stood around the corner…we got to hold hands without seeing each other.

Getting to see him as I walked down the aisle was breathtaking for me.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE SPRINGS?

We chose THE SPRINGS in Rockwall for a few reasons. One, it was the perfect distance for both of our families.

Two, the venue itself is literally the most perfect place to get married.

Three, Nicole Nanyes is an angel. I knew from just getting a tour that she was going to help make my day go as smoothly as possible. She’s patient and it is obvious that she really does CARE. Love her!!!!

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO FUTURE DIY BRIDES PLANNING ON A BUDGET?

Don’t let it stress you out. Don’t allow the season of planning for a wedding steal your joy. Try your best to enjoy every minute of it. There’s nothing like it.  We would change NOTHING about our wedding. Stephen and I actually talk about this often. We wish we could redo our wedding day… but not to do anything different… just simply because everything about it was SO PERFECT.

As for searching for a venue… even though you are on a budget, don’t settle for the first one!!!! And–if you don’t absolutely love it, DON’T do it.

After seeing Nikki’s wedding, being a bride on a budget isn’t too bad after all. 🙂 LOVE this wedding in every way, not only because of its beauty, but because of the amazing couple it celebrated.  Congratulations to the Lanes!  We hope your life is full of years of pure joy + genuine bliss.

Love, THE SPRINGS.
