an E V E R G R E E N wedding:
–one that never goes out of style–
Meet Nico + Ashley Smith.
The world’s cutest couple–and the reason this perfect wedding ever came to be.
We interviewed Ashley to find out her + Nico’s story, as well as how she felt about the wedding day. All the answers below are in her own words.
HOW DID YOU + NICO MEET?
It all started with a picture.
Back in May 2014, my friend Faith Harris was showing me pictures from when her husband proposed to her. As she was scrolling, I saw a picture of a man hugging her, so I asked, “WHO IS THAT?” She said, “That’s Nico… The guy I have been trying to get you to meet.” (This was very true–I had just kept making up excuses why I couldn’t meet him). This picture changed everything.
I kept bothering her about him until I finally told her to give him my number. She did, and soon after I received a text from Nico introducing himself. I felt butterflies instantly, and wanted nothing more than to talk to him 24/7. After a long summer of texting, Nico made plans to come down to Dallas from North Carolina to stay the week with Faith’s husband. I was SO excited to meet him and when the day finally came I was more nervous than I have ever been. I got in my car and drove over to Chris Harris’s house–and when I knocked on the door, Nico answered.
In that moment, my life changed forever.
Nico embraced me with the best hug I have ever been given, and that whole weekend was more than perfect. The day he left to go to College Station was when we officially decided we wanted to date. Now we are here, MARRIED!
HOW DID NICO PROPOSE?
Nico and I went to the beach for our spring break getaway last year. We also went the previous year and did a fancy dinner one night during the week, so of course we had to plan another one of those fancy dinners. This time the fancy dinner felt a little different.
Nico was SO nervous and every detail about this dinner seemed to matter (down to what the weather was like). When the night finally came around he told me he wanted to go take pictures on the beach, but instead of going to the beach outside of our door, he wanted to drive a little ways down and take pictures there. When we got to the part of the beach he was driving to, he drove into the parking lot and parked on the side where absolutely no cars were parked on. We got out of the car, walked down to the sand, took our shoes off, and began heading to the water.
It only took us about one minute to walk to the water. Nico stopped and hugged me–and before I knew it, he was on his knee!! I was so in shock I don’t remember a single thing that was said, but after that, we were engaged! He also had a secret photographer who captured all of the amazing moments.
Nico + Ashley got engaged March 15, 2016, booked THE SPRINGS in Denton (The Ranch), and got married on May 21, 2017.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE SPRINGS?
We chose THE SPRINGS because the second we walked into the venue they treated us like family. Kathy (the manager of the Denton location) was so welcoming to us, and even though Nico was on FaceTime, she was sure to make him feel like he was there. As we were touring the venue there was no question that I was going to choose THE SPRINGS. The options are endless with this venue! I have always had a HUGE dream of what my wedding would look like, and I could see my wedding Pinterest board come to life.
WHAT WERE SOME OF THE BEST MEMORIES FROM YOUR WEDDING DAY?
Walking into the venue the day of my wedding was so amazing. I walked in and got to see everyone setting up, and everything looked so beautiful–it took my breath away!
My second favorite part was my first look with Nico. It was so sweet to have a moment with Nico with no one else around.
Then, of course, the ceremony was the best. Nico dropped my ring during the ceremony and it was sure to give everyone a good laugh. We also wrote our own vows and Nico’s were BEAUTIFUL.
Even though there are too many favorite memories my last would be getting to surprise my mom with a first dance. I wanted to be able to recognize her in some way and this was the perfect way to do it!
WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR FUTURE COUPLES GETTING MARRIED?
Try and soak up every single moment you can. Everyone used to always tell me to enjoy every moment because it would fly by, and I always thought to myself, “Of course I’m going to enjoy the wedding–it’s my wedding!!” and I would blow it off. Now, I can truly say the wedding DID fly by, and there were many moments I didn’t get to soak in because I was flying from one place to the next following the reception schedule.
IF YOU COULD DO IT OVER AGAIN, WOULD YOU CHANGE ANYTHING?
I would’ve stressed less. My wedding truly fell into place perfectly, so I shouldn’t have stressed so much over the details–because at the end of the night, I remember all of the fun I had with my family and friends, not the flowers or decorative signs that were sitting on tables.
WHAT WOULD YOU TELL OTHERS ABOUT TOURING VENUES?
Make a list of the things that are a MUST with your venue. Then go to your venue with an open mind, put aside the wedding Pinterest board, and just think about all of those things you’ve always wanted. Be sure to get all the details from your venue, such as their policies on drapes being hung from the ceiling, lighting real candles, etc. Just make sure you get all of your questions answered. Then go home and think about it all to decide if the venue is one that can provide your dream wedding.
Nico + Ashley’s evergreen wedding was absolutely perfect–classy, elegant, and surely will never go out of style.
Best wishes to the Smith’s as they embark on life’s journey together! We were so honored to be a part of your once-in-a-lifetime day.
