Kerry + Abby’s wedding in Denton was nothing short of a dream. These two were one of the sweetest couples we’ve ever had at THE SPRINGS, and I am so excited to share their story today!
All of the answers below are in Abby’s words–and the photos are all thanks to Emily Nicole Photography.
ABBY, HOW DID YOU MEET KERRY?
We met our junior year at Abilene Christian University through mutual friends. Neither of us remember the exact time we met, but I do remember the first time I really noticed Kerry! I was waiting to referee his intramural volleyball game, and he casually started a conversation with me before the game. I remember thinking afterwards, “Wow, he is the nicest person I think I’ve ever met, and not to mention very cute!” I asked him to be my date to a sorority event within the next week, and the rest is history. I still think he is the nicest person I’ve ever met, and so very cute!
TELL US ALL ABOUT THE PROPOSAL!
We knew we wanted to get married, but we had decided our engagement would have to happen sometime after graduation in May. Needless to say, I was shocked when he asked in March, which was special to me because that meant I would get to celebrate a fun tradition with my sorority.
The day of our engagement was a whirlwind. I had just finished a fairly traumatic 12-hour shift as a nursing student in the ICU where I now work, and we had a surprise date planned for when I got off. I rushed home to change into an outfit my mom had bought me for the date (should have been a clue, right?). All I remember while I was quickly getting ready was Kerry asking, “Are you ready?” with this giddy grin, and all I said each time was, “Yes… I’m hungry!!” We got in the car and I talked and talked all about my crazy day while trying to figure out where we were going to eat. He finally told me he was taking me on a picnic. There was a basket in the back seat, and I wasn’t allowed to open it because dinner was a surprise. It sounded a little suspicious to me, but I thought there was no way he was proposing right now.
We pulled up to a little park deck overlooking a pond, and he told me to lay out the blanket we had brought and to face the other way. The whole time I’m thinking, “There’s no way he’s actually about to do this…”
Well, he told me to turn around, and when I did he was on his knee with the ring of my dreams! It is a rose gold oval setting, with the most sparkly diamond and halo I’ve ever seen!
He started to read a letter he had written, but ditched it two lines in and just poured out his heart. I was just in shock. Of course I said yes!
Then I looked up to see our families (who live hours away from us) and a few of our best friends. They saw the whole thing! Family is so important to both of us, so the reality of what just happened hit me when I saw them and I cried lots of happy tears. He and my parents had planned a barbecue engagement party at my college house, and some of my sweet friends were there setting it all up! He had planned out everything so carefully, and I wouldn’t change a thing!
KERRY + ABBY PLANNED THEIR WEDDING FOR NINE MONTHS, AND FINALLY SAID “I DO” ON JANUARY 6, 2017.
TELL US THE BEST MEMORIES FROM YOUR WEDDING DAY!
It’s so hard to just share a few of my favorite memories of our wedding day! I loved walking into the venue that morning with it lightly snowing outside and my grandparents, parents, and some of their sweet friends working away at creating the wedding of my dreams.
I loved sitting with the wedding party (minus Kerry) during the rehearsal that morning, and Kerry’s youth minister, Kevin Huddleston, praying over the day, our marriage, our friends, and giving us so much encouragement.
I loved the heart-racing feeling of getting to see Kerry for the first time that day, and the excitement we shared as we couldn’t believe this day was finally here.
I loved having our families surround us in prayer as my cousins sang “Always Forever” over us during our ceremony.
I loved getting to visit with everyone who came, I felt incredibly blessed and surrounded by love and support!
We had such a wonderful time dancing with our friends and family, too. One of my favorite parts was the last song of the night. I have to preface by telling you that I have a happy dance that consists of basically punching the air out of excitement. (Silly, I know!) So we had asked our DJ to end with “Can’t Stop the Feeling” by Justin Timberlake. The chorus of that song just fit perfectly with my happy dance, and by the end of the song, EVERYONE was doing my happy dance with me! It was probably the most fun moment of the night!!!
WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR FUTURE COUPLES PLANNING A WEDDING?
To future couples planning a wedding… It is YOUR day! You get to make it exactly what you want, and everyone is there for YOU! Embrace it and enjoy it.
IF YOU COULD DO IT OVER AGAIN, WOULD YOU CHANGE ANYTHING?
I would change nothing about the way everything played out. The only thing I would change is my mindset about it! I tend to get stressed about how things are going to turn out, and it’s amazing how easily you can rob yourself from fully enjoying a perfect day! Luckily I have wonderful family and friends who helped me settle down and really enjoy the whole day!
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE SPRINGS?
We chose THE SPRINGS for many reasons! We went to the open house in April, and the welcoming staff and friendly vendors were a lot of fun to meet. I liked the wintery lodge feeling this venue had, rather than the rustic feel of many other places I had looked at. They made it so easy to do what we wanted, with no preferred caterers and many suggestions for vendors when we had no idea where to turn! While we didn’t get to use the beautiful outdoor ceremony area, we had plenty of space indoors to flip the ceremony to reception seamlessly and keep the party moving!
WHAT WOULD YOU TELL NEW BRIDES ABOUT TOURING VENUES + GETTING STARTED WITH WEDDING PLANNING?
I would suggest to make sure you know all of the details of what your venue offers, not just how pretty you think it is! Many, like THE SPRINGS, provide tables and chairs, which could get expensive to rent if it was not included in the price. Also, look into whether your venue has a select group of vendors they allow. Places that only allow certain vendors can really stifle your creativity or budget!
When wedding planning, I would encourage you to have general ideas of what you’d like, but be open to all of the different ways you can make that happen! Weddings don’t have to be incredibly expensive to give the feel that you’d like or for your guests to have a great time!
Abby was a gorgeous bride–inside + out–who ended up with the perfect wedding and the sweetest husband. We are SO happy for you two and wish you all the happiness in the world! Thank you for sharing your wedding day + love story with all of us.
