CODY, HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

The first time I saw Shelby was what seems like so long ago in Mrs. Evan’s sixth grade math class. Shelby moved to Glen Rose in 2006 and the saying that everyone thinks the new girl is cute was undoubtedly true. Being the romantic that I am, I would intentionally start our famous eraser wars and “accidentally” throw one at her to get her attention. So yeah, maybe she initially saw me as the class clown, but like they say, any publicity is good publicity. Despite costing my parent’s money on my large supply of erasers, Shelby didn’t talk to me for the first time until I got in a fight at a seventh grade track meet. As it turns out, Shelby had a soft spot for troublemakers after all. In high school, I always had my heart set on one girl, even if she did turn me down two or three times. As many of you know, what I may lack in looks I made up for in confidence and refused to enter the dreaded “friend zone.” Shelby and I had BCIS together freshman year and we entered into the same UIL competition, so we spent a lot of time together that year. She sadly began to call me her best guy friend, but little did she know that was merely my tactic for sweeping her off her feet. At that time I actually had a girlfriend with the same birthday, and being the stupid 15-year-old that I was, I had the brilliant idea of buying them both jewelry for their birthdays. This was inevitably followed by a break-up, but opened a gateway into Shelby’s heart. Soon after, I asked Shelby to go out with me, but she of course didn’t want to risk our “friendship…” blah, blah, blah. Being a resilient and now sophomore boy, I kept at it–and after endless rejections, she finally said yes on February 12th, 2011. From there, the rest is history. We went on to have unforgettable high school and college journeys, getting the luxury of experiencing both together. I knew in high school that Shelby would be the woman I married, it was only a matter of time. She supported me at every football game I ever played, high school to college, and I was able to support Shelby through nursing school. Now, we are on the journey to forever.

SHELBY, TELL US ABOUT THE PROPOSAL!

We got engaged on December 20, 2015. Cody’s 21st birthday was on the 18th and I surprised him with tickets to the Dallas Cowboys game (we are huge fans). We went to the game then drove all night after the game to Red River, New Mexico to go skiing with my family. WE LOVE TO SKI! We skied all day, then went back up to the top, and I guess he knew I would ask my mom to take our picture (he knows me and my picture fetish too well). She took a few pictures and I went to look at them to make sure they were Insta-worthy, and Cody grabbed my hand. He said some sweet words that I couldn’t even process, then got down on his knee and pulled out the perfect ring (all the while he still had on his Dallas Cowboys jersey). The ring is a princess cut halo and I’m still in love! I really didn’t expect it. Because we are from the same small town and had been dating for five years. At that point, a lot of people started asking us when it would happen. Cody played it off well saying he wanted us to graduate, he needed to save up money, then he could take me to pick out the ring… blah, blah, blah. He just used his resources (my mom, my friends, Pinterest, and his sister) and went ring shopping impromptu–but the ring was everything I wanted!

Cody + Shelby planned their wedding for a little over a year.  During that time, Shelby graduated from nursing school, passed her NCLEX, and Cody played football at Tarleton State University.  Finally, they said “I do” at THE SPRINGS Event Venue in Weatherford, TX on April 22, 2017.

SHELBY, WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE SPRINGS AS YOUR WEDDING VENUE?

real wedding in Weatherford, TX

We chose THE SPRINGS mostly because it was so, so, SO pretty! THE SPRINGS in Weatherford is fairly new, and no one from my hometown had gotten married there yet, so that was really nice. THE SPRINGS is extremely competent in the wedding business, and are experts in knowing how to run a wedding most efficiently from the venue’s perspective. The bridal room was a dream, and the boys enjoyed their room, too. The features of THE SPRINGS were thought out so well–from the wet bar with built in drains, to the buffet bar with the attached prep kitchen. I loved that they provided all the tables and chairs (which were BEAUTIFUL), and they set them up for us exactly how I wanted. With it being an April wedding, rain was a big worry. THE SPRINGS has a GORGEOUS outdoor setup, but it is very easy to move the ceremony inside as well and still have everything you want. There is also turf for the outdoor ceremony seating, so if it were to rain that morning it would have been dry for the ceremony. I also loved the customer service–for example, I made a slideshow that played during our first dance and the lovely SPRINGS employees helped me preview it beforehand to make sure everything ran smoothly. Additionally, THE SPRINGS allowed us to have the venue for 15 hours which was more than most other venues we viewed. And I LOVED the staircase! Our wedding party made up their own little routine to do while walking down the stairs when their name was called, and we had so much fun with that!

SHELBY, WHAT WERE SOME OF THE BEST MEMORIES FROM YOUR WEDDING DAY?

It was so fun getting ready at the venue with all of my bridesmaids, my mom, my aunt, and both of my grandmas. My aunt brought us a little brunch, and we ate there at the venue while getting ready for the day. It was such a special time before the ceremony spending time with the people that mean the most to me.

I did a first look with my dad and brother and that was very special as well.

Seeing Cody at the end of the aisle, while also seeing all of our friends and family in the audience supporting us and showing us love, was probably my favorite part.

Walking back down the aisle as a married couple and getting the blessing from our pastor was priceless.

I loved walking down the stairs after our wedding party to kick start the reception.

It was so humbling to see all the people at the very end who stayed to send us off, it was quite a few!

As beautiful as Shelby said it in words, the Burtscher’s wedding day can really only be fully appreciated by watching their  P E R F E C T  wedding video.  Seriously, I’m crying!!!

SHELBY, WHAT IS YOUR BEST ADVICE FOR FUTURE COUPLES PLANNING A WEDDING?

I would say start early! It’s never too early, the last few weeks before the wedding were a tad stressful, but it would have been so much worse if I hadn’t started planning very early. And always remember it’s YOUR wedding, do what makes you happy. I had 10 bridesmaids (people give me crazy looks when I tell them that), but it meant something to me to have all of them, so I did what made me happy and I am so glad I did! Also, planning for the wedding is important but planning for the MARRIAGE is the key. I highly suggest premarital counseling, Cody and I enjoyed it very much.

SHELBY, IF YOU COULD DO IT OVER AGAIN, WOULD YOU CHANGE ANYTHING?

I would have relaxed a little more in the beginning, and not sweat the small things too much. It’s a happy time, and at times I got too wrapped up in the details that no one even noticed! Also, don’t try to make everyone happy because it’s impossible. Be nice, be respectful, and do you!
